Selecting The Right Steering Wheel Cover
Do not laugh – there is more to buying a steering wheel cover than walking into a shop, pointing, saying “I will have that oneâ€, handing over your card and leaving. There are more considerations than just finding one that looks good in the shop, so it is worth taking a bit of time to consider your purchase before you go anywhere. Price, ergonomics, how it looks in your car – these are just a few points to mull over, but every driver is different, and every car has its perfect fit so there’s no right or wrong answer.

Price is as much a consideration when buying a steering wheel cover as any other purchase. You could buy the cheapest one in the store – and it may work out fine for you – but if you are concerned with not spending a penny more than you can get away with then perhaps your current steering wheel is the right one for you. The price range will be your guide – if it is touching $35 then it is a deluxe model, $2 and it may well just be a bunch of straws taped together. Mid-range ones may well be your best bet here. They would not melt in hot weather, and your card would not melt in the machine.

The size of your actual steering wheel is another important guide. There is no point walking into an auto accessories shop, finding one you like the look of and walking out elated, only to find that it does not fit. Measure the diameter and circumference of your own steering wheel, and take these in with you. Most covers will actually mention on the packaging what ranges of cars they are compatible with, so you may not have to go as far as to take a tape measure with you at all times.

Even if it seems to be the correct size, though, a steering wheel cover may have issues where fit is concerned. It is no good having one that you can get on the wheel and looks good, but hangs loosely once on. Many people out there are clumsy enough for that to be the cause of a multi-car pile-up. It might be that your best option is an adjustable one that can be tightened by way of a cord, or even one that stitches on. Also, consider the material, how it feels to the touch and what kind of grip it gives. If it looks good but has the purchase of a freshly caught salmon, then it is best left on the shelf.

Finally, looks ARE important. No, that does not mean your spouse married you because you look hot in a bathing costume (although if that is the case, kudos). The way a steering wheel cover looks inside your car can make a real difference. Do not buy one that clashes with the interior of your car – the resulting visual mess could actually be a distraction when you are driving. How embarrassed are you going to be when the arresting officer asks why you hit the car in front and you have to tell him that the garish leopard-print steering wheel cover caused temporary blindness?
