Fluid Retention, An Underlying Physiological Problem

A large part of our body almost 60 percent of it is made up of water. The function of all the body parts and minute cells are solely depends on the water present in our body. Kidneys and heart controls the fluid level and keep them stable inside the body. It has been seen that whenever dehydration or fluid retention occurs they specify an underlying physiological problem.

We have seen that an immediate response to any injury is swelling. There can be a number of causes for swelling. Ankle sprain or burn, bloated legs or ankles during pregnancy are all starts with the sign of swelling. Minor swelling if not treated at time can cause the fluid buildup at that point and further endanger the working and functioning of the joints and other parts of the body. If you ever observe any kind of swelling in any of your body part, follow these tips to keep the fluid retention down.

Keep moving

Swelling in legs is usually because of the lack of mobility and exercise. Always force yourself to walk even for few paces. Avoid long sitting sessions at work or even in plane while travelling. You have to keep yourself moving every now and then. It is better to flex or bend your knees and ankles and wiggle your toes, if you have a limited mobility. Besides this don't sit for long crossing your legs. This may block the blood passage. Use your muscles as much as possible to prevent pooling of blood and interstitial fluid.  

Raise it

One other beneficial way to drop down the extremity is to raise it above the heart. This will allow the fluid to drain down by means of gravity.

Leg support

Long standing sessions can sometimes cause the varicose veins and swelling in legs. This is because of the increased fluid pressure inside the blood vessels and capillaries. Prescription support stockings (anti-embolic stockings) and over-the-counter support hose are available in the market having various degrees of compression. Use them with due care otherwise they will further worsen the situation for you.

Check for Sodium

As much sodium you intake, more will be the chances of retaining fluid in your body. It is better to reduce the usage of sodium in your diet. For that, you have to refrain from eating junk foods, root crops and canned goods. You can consult your dietician to have a prescription for low sodium diet.

Proper Weight

Keep your weight under control. Overweight and fat people are generally more exposed to diseases.

Maintain the Proper Circulation

To keep your blood circulation at normal level, exercise and massage are of great help. Even a gentle massage on your swollen part can be a healer.

Your Medication

Keep an eye on your medication. Some medications can cause fluid retention like birth control pills.

Avoid Tight Fitting Clothes

To keep your blood circulation going always try to wear loose clothes, avoid wearing tight jeans and other tight clothes.

These all steps will help your to control the minor swellings. If swelling persists for longer time consult your physician immediately.
